INSTALLATION

The Installation of tatami mats is very simple. You can use the following instructions to install your new tatami:

First, clean the floor so it is free of all dirt.

Start in one corner of the room with a corner tile and add border tiles outward along the adjacent walls. Add center, corner, and border tiles where you see fit.

When coming up to an opposite wall, make sure you cut the tiles to fit the area. The proper way to cut the mat is with a cutter. Using a pencil draw a line where you want to cut the mat, and with a ruler cut alone the line with the cutter. Then fold the mat and with the cutter cut the bottom surface of the mat.

When piecing interlocking tiles together, adhesives are usually not used since the weight of the mats locked together is sufficient enough to keep it from moving. However, if you do experience movement and would like to ensure that the tiles do not slide at all, add some double-sided tape around the perimeter of the installed tatami.

CLEANING & MAINTANCE

Tatami mats are easy to clean and require little maintenance. These tiles are made of durable closed cell EVA foam which means liquids cannot penetrate the surface of the mat.

The surface of the tatami is designed so it would not absorb any stains.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TATAMI

The best cleaning materials for tatami mats are good quality dish detergents which include grease dissolvent and antiseptic substances but gently with your skin. It is wise to use floor detergents because these are aggressive and not healthy when contact with the skin.

The best way to wash your tatami is one by one with a sponge or a soft brush, then rinse them with clear water and let them dry.

If you’re short on time you can use a floor wiping mop, but you need to be careful because the water my leak in the puzzle edges of the tatami. In this case use a moderately wet mop.
